First Sacraments at St. Augustine’s Parish

CONFESSION / COMMUNION

First Sacraments and Confirmation at St. Augustine’s take place in the Spring, following Easter. (see above for dates). Parish, schools and parent collaborate together to help our children prepare for these special occasions in their faith journey. In the schools the children follow the catechetical  program of the school curriculum. For First Confession/Communion we supplement the school curriculum with two recourses which the parents use together with the school for the immediate preparation for the sacraments.

We Discover God’s Paths and We Shsre the Eucharist have been written by two of the world's most respected catechists and religious educators. These books encourage parents and children to share and celebrate together. In clear, concrete ways, parents are encouraged to become the primary religious educators of their children, while fostering closer ties between home, school, and parish.

The child participates in storytelling, drawing, and sharing. The parents' guide offers suggestions for activities and instructions for reinforcing lessons with daily conversations and prayer.

These two books are made available at the Parent Meatings (see schedule).
Our children who are following the Coresponence Program have separate resourses

Parent’s role in the First Sacraments preparation

  • First and most imporant, parents bring their children to Sunday Mass. First Communion is the first time the child receives communion at Mass. However, the Mass must already be a normal part of their experience. While we make First Communion day a special occasion, it must always be seens as beginning of what will be the regular experience of the child.
  • Two Parent Meetings are scheduled to discuss details of sacraments preparation.for home, school & parish.
  • An information application must be filled out and a copy of the child’s baptism certificate attatched. The certificate is not required if the child is baptized at St. Augustine’s. (Available on this page)

CONFIRMATION

  • The Confirmation candidate is expected to celebrate the Sunday Eucharistic Liturgy and parents must encourage them to come to Mass.
  • An information application must be filled out and a copy of the candidate’s baptism certificate attatched. The certificate is not required if the child is baptized at St. Augustine’s. (Available on this page)
  • A Parent Meeting is scheduled to discuss details of sacraments preparation.for home, school & parish.
