Introduction To The Liturgy of the Day

Thirtieth Sunday of the Year

Disciples of Jesus aspire to have a deep sense of humility. Modern day followers of Jesus seek several spiritual qualities as part of their commitment to discipleship. Among these is humility. This quality grows through specific practices, including how we show we value each person, or by refusing to judge or measure another's spiritual worth. Finally, the truly humble take joy in how they can serve the needs of others.

Today's familiar Gospel describes the difference in the prayer of the Pharisee and the tax collector. If we look closely at ourselves, we are likely to realize that both figures live within us. Yet, as we are reminded in today's readings, as disciples, we can nurture true humility by honoring every person and seeing how our shared humanity reflects our Creator.
